Some Like it Hot - The thermal baths of Budapest take you on a journey through time.

Hungary may not be blessed with towering mountains, but, by way of compensation, the Earth’s thin crust allows healing hot water to gush forth almost everywhere you go. The Romans, no strangers to the good life, were the first to take advantage of this naturally occurring phenomenon, and Budapest also offers some of the finest examples of the “Turkish Bath” found anywhere.

Budapest is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, often being referred to as the ‘Paris of the East’ because of its beautiful architecture, wide boulevards and romantic atmosphere. Steeped in history and offering a unique blend of western chic and eastern charm it is hard to resist, especially in winter.

Bathing in a hot spa is a national pastime for Hungarians and with 40 thermal spas in the city visitors are spoilt for choice. In the winter one of the most unique experiences is bathing outside, as the sun goes down enjoying relaxing in the steaming hot pools. The Széchenyi, Gellért or Rudas can’t be beaten for atmosphere and during the Budapest Winter Invitation campaign visitors get free entry into one of these historic spas.

Fancy a spot of ice skating? The Müjégpálya Ice Rink in Budapest’s City Park offers a skating experience second to none against the backdrop of the Vajdahunyad Castle. Or if shopping is more your thing head down ‘Fashion Street’, Budapest’s equivalent to London’s Regent Street that offers a whole host of the most stylish and fashionable shops around.

Culture vultures have endless possibilities in Budapest. From world-class opera and ballet in the neo-Renaissance State Opera House to concerts and exhibitions at the Palace of Arts, as well as traditional festive performances at the Christmas market. Those interested in Hungary’s history can visit the fascinating House of Terror that documents Hungary’s dark past in a stylish fashion or take a short trip out of town to outdoor museum, Memento Park with its unique collection of communist statues. Sixt Rent a Car is also offering special rates if you prefer the freedom to drive out of the city.

After all that sightseeing a well earned coffee break is needed and Budapest is home to many historical cafes. Famous for its cakes and pastries, one of Budapest’s most popular is the 150 year old Gerbeaud on the Pest side. On the Buda side Budapest’s oldest cafe, the tiny Ruszwurm patisserie has been serving cakes and coffee since 1827. Visitors will also enjoy the New York Café where many great writers, politicians, and journalists have spent time drinking coffee and socialising here since 1894.

Tempted? Then take advantage of the Budapest Winter Invitation and get an extra day for ‘free’ to enjoy the magic of the Hungarian capital. From 15th November 2011 to the 31st March 2012 many of the city’s leading hotels are offering ‘four nights for the price of three’ or ‘three nights for the price of two’ PLUS free entry into one of three of the city’s most popular spas – Széchenyi, Gellért or Rudas.

Guests of the Budapest Winter Invitation will also be able to purchase the Budapest Card at a discounted rate, which offers free transport around the city as well as many discounts at restaurants, and attractions, plus two free sightseeing tours!

What are you waiting for? Whether you are looking for a Christmas shopping trip, somewhere to pop the champagne on New Year’s Eve or a luxury romantic city break to treat your loved one, Budapest is hard to beat. Visit www.budapestwinter.com for more details.
